Luke

New Testament · Gospel · Traditionally attributed to Luke · 24 chapters

Luke, a physician and companion of Paul, wrote the fullest and most polished of the Gospels, addressed to a wider Greek-speaking world. He is the historian and the evangelist of compassion, giving special place to the poor, women, outsiders and sinners whom Jesus welcomes.

Unique to Luke are the fullest nativity account, the parables of the good Samaritan and the prodigal son, and the emphasis on prayer, joy and the Holy Spirit. His Gospel is the first volume of a two-part work continued in Acts, tracing the good news from a manger in Bethlehem to its spread toward the ends of the earth.
