Perez
A son of Judah by Tamar, and twin of Zerah. At their birth Zerah's hand appeared first and the midwife tied a scarlet thread to it, but he drew it back and Perez was born first — hence the name, 'a breach'. Despite the irregularity of his conception he became the ancestor of the leading clan of Judah: Boaz, Jesse and David descended from him, and both Matthew and Luke carry his name in the genealogy of Jesus. The blessing spoken over Boaz and Ruth asks that their house be like the house of Perez.
