Joshua

Joshua records Israel's entry into Canaan under Moses' successor. It opens with the crossing of the Jordan and the fall of Jericho, and moves through the campaigns by which the land is taken, and its division among the twelve tribes.

The book presents the conquest as the fulfilment of God's promise to the patriarchs, its victories hinging on faith and obedience rather than military might. It closes with Joshua's challenge at Shechem — 'Choose this day whom you will serve... but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord' (24:15) — the covenant renewed for a settled people.
