2 Kings

2 Kings continues the story of the divided monarchy toward catastrophe. Elijah is taken up in a whirlwind and his ministry passes to Elisha, whose miracles fill the early chapters. The northern kingdom, unrepentant, falls to Assyria in 722 BC and its people are deported.

Judah survives longer, with bright spots under Hezekiah and Josiah, but slides into idolatry until Babylon destroys Jerusalem and its Temple in 586 BC and carries the people into exile. 2 Kings is the sobering account of how covenant unfaithfulness brought the promises to the brink — closing with a faint glimmer as an exiled king is shown mercy in Babylon.
