Exodus

Old Testament · Law / Torah · Traditionally attributed to Moses · 40 chapters

Exodus tells how God rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt and forged them into a nation. Under Moses, and against Pharaoh's hard heart, come the ten plagues, the first Passover, and the deliverance through the parted sea — the defining act of salvation in the Old Testament.

At Mount Sinai God gives the Ten Commandments and the Law, sealing a covenant with the people, and detailed instructions for the tabernacle where he will dwell among them. The book's great themes — redemption, covenant, law and the presence of God — echo through the whole of Scripture, and the Passover foreshadows the New Testament's language of redemption.
