Asa
A king of Judah who did what was right, removing the foreign altars and high places, deposing his grandmother Maacah for making an image of Asherah, and repairing the altar of the Lord. Faced with an overwhelming invasion he prayed that it was nothing for God to help the powerless, and won. In his later years, however, he bought Aramean help against Baasha with the temple silver rather than relying on God, imprisoned the seer who rebuked him, and in his fatal illness sought only physicians. He reigned forty-one years.
