Philippi
A Roman colony in Macedonia and the first city in Europe where Paul preached. Lydia the dealer in purple cloth was converted here, Paul and Silas were flogged and imprisoned and freed by an earthquake, and the church that grew here received the warmest of Paul's letters (Acts 16:12-40; Philippians).
