ScholarlyFrom at least the third century, church writers proposed identifying Paul's Philippian co-worker with Clement of Rome, the traditional author of 1 Clement. The identification is early but unproven, and most modern scholars treat it as a pious harmonization rather than established fact.
Tradition preserved in Origen (Commentary on John 6.36) and Eusebius, Ecclesiastical History 3.4.9; regarded as tradition, not demonstrable.
