Eve

The first woman, made as a companion and helper corresponding to Adam, and called by him 'the mother of all living'. Approached by the serpent, she was persuaded that the forbidden fruit would make her wise, ate, and gave some to her husband. The judgement that followed included pain in childbearing and expulsion from the garden — but also the first promise of a deliverer, that her offspring would crush the serpent's head. She bore Cain, Abel and Seth, and knew the grief of losing both her elder sons in a single act.

Role: The first woman

ScholarlyEve renders the Hebrew Hawwah, which Genesis 3:20 explicitly links to the root for "living" (hay), explaining the name "because she was the mother of all living." The Septuagint reflects this sense by rendering the name Zoe, "life," at that verse.
