Sea of Galilee

Sea / lake / river · Modern: Lake Kinneret, Israel · Galilee

The freshwater lake of northern Israel, also called Gennesaret and Tiberias, ringed by the towns of Jesus's Galilean ministry. Its fishing trade gave him several of his disciples, and its sudden violent squalls form the setting of the calming of the storm and the walking on the water (Matthew 4:18; 8:23-27; 14:22-33).

Where in scripture

Walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers: Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

Matthew 4:18 — cited in the description of Sea of Galilee
