Edessa

A city of northern Mesopotamia, modern Şanlıurfa, which became one of the earliest and most important centres of Syriac-speaking Christianity. Later tradition tells of a correspondence between its king Abgar and Jesus, and of the mission of Thaddaeus to the city; neither is recorded in scripture.
