A prophet of Judah from Moresheth, a contemporary of Isaiah, who preached against the rulers, priests and prophets who sold their judgements and built Zion with blood. He foretold that Jerusalem would become a heap of ruins — a prophecy remembered a century later when it saved Jeremiah's life. He also named BethlehemEphrathah as the birthplace of the ruler whose origin is from of old, and summed up religion in the line still quoted: to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.
ScholarlyUniquely among the prophets, Micah is quoted by name a century after his death: when Jeremiah is on trial for his life, the elders recall how 'Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah' — proof his oracles were preserved and remembered.
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
being small among the clans of Judah,
out of you one will come out to me that is to be ruler in Israel;
whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.
